How to locate unregistered land and contact the owner.
Registration of property only became compulsory in the 1980/1990's, any properties which haven’t changed hands since will therefore be unregistered.
Unfortunately, this means it is quite different to find out exactly who owns the property/ land.
We suggest there are 4 possible ways to locate the owners of unregistered land:
- Write to the address: If you click on the ‘U’ pin, the info panel will often show you the properties address. You can write a letter to this address and see if you get a response from the owner.
- View the planning history: Any unregistered pins which are yellow in colour are indicating that the property has applied for planning permission. You can then see who applied for that permission.
- View any leases: Sometimes you will see there is a ease outline on a piece of unregistered land, this means there is a leasehold attached to the freehold. You can use this information to find the owner/ landlord.
- Check out surrounding properties: sometimes you will find that a small piece of land has been carved out and sold from a much larger plot. You can see who sold the land and therefore who owns the unregistered area.
